Public Notification
Public Notification
The NJDEP requires early, two-way communication by parties responsible for remediations (RPs) with residents, business owners and local officials potentially affected by remediation activities to support a successful investigation and remediation. With an effective outreach strategy, RPs can identify the needs and concerns of the community and deal with them proactively. Effective outreach creates a forum to share information and raise and address community concerns about future use early in the remediation process. This effort can save time and money and build critical community support. For this reason, the NJDEP adopted regulations that require RPs to perform public notification and outreach at the onset of the remedial investigation phase of their cleanup.
Public notification requirements can be satisfied by either posting a sign with relevant information, or sending information letters to neighboring properties, then filing a required form with the NJDEP at least 14 days prior to starting field activities. A sign must be clearly visible to the public, identify you as the RP, and identify the Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) of record. Letters must include the same information as a sign, plus some additional information about the project.
Peak can provide support in choosing whether to provide public notice by posting a sign or by sending letters. Peak has extensive public notice experience using both options, managing communications with NJDEP and municipal officials, and responding to inquiries generated by the sign or letters.
