When contaminant concentrations greater than an applicable standard are found on a property, it starts a regulatory process under which the person responsible must investigate and remove the source, delineate the contamination in each media (ie soil), and remediate the contamination for the protection of human health and the environment. While this is a lengthy and costly process, regulations and technical guidance provide options to achieve compliance with the applicable remediation standards during each step of the investigation and remediation, shortening the overall time and cost of the project.
The primary option for compliance is the use of discrete sampling points at which each regulated contaminant is compared to its applicable standard. However, data analysis and interpretation are also allowed using statistical methods that can demonstrate compliance even if some individual locations are greater than standard. Further, more complex numerical and spatial statistical methods are also allowed that may also reduce investigative or remediation requirements relative to other methods.
To decide which option may be used to demonstrate compliance with applicable standards, Peak’s technical teams identify the applicable standards for each project, evaluate available data, and apply professional judgment to pinpoint the most cost-effective strategy to gain compliance and close projects in a timely manner.
